[Lee Koon Hung Choy Lay Fut, Chinese New Year Performance; 2000]
[Chapter 2]

Moving forward, still with no formal martial arts instruction, I met a few friends in high school who did. On the occasion, we might throw a few kicks for fun. It was a friendly camaraderie act to pretend to kick the other person in the knees or to the head.

Now that I look back on it, these high school friends gave me the first upfront display of martial arts. One of these friends, Chung, was a student at the Lee Koon Hung Choy Lay Fut school. On one Chinese New Years, I went with my family to drink tea and were able to witness that school perform the first actual lion dance I ever remember seeing.

Further, he and I went to spectate my first martial arts tournament I have ever been to, the 1999 Florida Chinese Martial Arts Championships. Quite an experience it was to see the amazing skill displayed by the youth at this tournament.

Another memory I will not forget is when I sparred, lightly of course with pads, with these guys. I, being the amateur that I was, was not too skilled and remember being kicked and punched quite a few times. It was a great experience nevertheless. Besides being friends, I looked up to them as my first martial arts brothers.

At this point, I had really wanted to take a martial arts class. I would begin to train on my own, practicing and conditioning myself. It was push-ups and stretching late at night. It was attempting to do kip-ups for the first time. It was going to the local park to exercise. And it was the occasional practices with friends.

However, with parental disaproval, the martial arts would have to wait. Soon enough, I will get my first taste of formal martial arts instruction.
